Most people don’t realize sciatica isn’t actually a condition—it’s a signal. When the sciatic nerve gets compressed or irritated somewhere along its path from the lower spine through the leg, the result is pain, tingling, or numbness that can stop you mid-stride. And because that nerve is the longest in the body, the symptoms can show up almost anywhere from your lower back to your foot.
Common Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatica shows up differently for everyone, but a few patterns are consistent. Look for burning or shooting pain from the lower back into the leg, numbness or tingling in the calf or foot, muscle weakness on one side, and discomfort that worsens with prolonged sitting or sudden movement.
What Causes Sciatica?
Three causes come up most often:
- Herniated discs: A spinal disc shifts and presses against a nearby nerve root in the lower back.
- Spinal misalignment: When vertebrae lose proper positioning, surrounding structures absorb uneven stress. Old injuries, repetitive movement, and poor posture are common contributors.
- Piriformis syndrome: A small muscle deep in the buttock tightens and compresses the nerve, mimicking disc-related symptoms.
How Chiropractic Care May Help
Chiropractic care works by identifying and correcting the biomechanical issues contributing to nerve irritation, rather than simply masking the pain.
At Embrace Chiropractic, the team uses Torque Release Technique (TRT), a low-force, precise adjustment method that involves no cracking, popping, or twisting. It’s a neurologically based approach focused on restoring proper brain stem and nervous system function. When the nervous system is working the way it should, the body has a better foundation for healing from the inside out.
“When someone comes in with sciatica, my first priority is figuring out what’s actually driving the nerve irritation. When we restore proper function to the spine and nervous system, the body often gets the chance to do what it’s designed to do, which is heal.” — Dr. Jared Morgan, D.C.
When Practice Members Should Seek an Evaluation
If sciatica symptoms have lasted more than a week or two, or they’re affecting your sleep, work, or daily movement, it’s time to get evaluated. You shouldn’t have to manage around this kind of discomfort indefinitely.
Boardman residents have access to chiropractic care right in their community, just off I-680. A thorough evaluation can clarify what’s contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care is the right fit.
